COMPANY HISTORY

The business was established by a Mr. Ed Cody under the name Cody Memorials about 1911. In 1945 Aubrey Cody (only child of Ed Cody) joined the business. Aubrey Cody became quite active in state and national monument builders associations and earned the distinction of being one of originating members of the national Association of Commerative Art. Mr. Aubrey Cody prided himself in building outstanding memorials and as a result was recognized as one of the very best craftsmen in the industry. The test of time has not diminished his superior workmanship which can be seen today in cemeteries throughout north central Kansas. In 1965 Audrey’s health failed and he sold the business to Mr. & Mrs. Homer Rundle and the name were changed to Rundle Monument Co. In 1977 the Rundle Monument Co., then operated by Harlan (the only son of Homer) and Martha Rundle, purchased the Schaubel Monument Co. of Clay Center and the two companies were incorporated into the present company. In 1980 the business began expanding into producing memorials for other companies and funeral homes and used the name Rockport Industries for this business. In 1982, a present owner, Mr. Alan Johnson, jointed the firm. In 1983 the firm was incorporated and Mr. Johnson bought into the company. In 1986 Mr. Johnson purchased the entire company and the Rundles left the firm to pursue other interests. In 1987 the company name was changed to Mastercarved Memorials, Inc. In 1995, Janet Clark, a key employee, bought into the business. Also in that year, Mrs. Clark and Mr. Johnson both earned the designation of Certified Memorialist by the Monument Builders of North America association. This is the highest level of professional recognition bestowed by this national organization. The firm and its employees have received both regional and national recognition for their outstanding service to their customers, their community and their industry since 1987. On an annual basis, the employees take part in continuing education seminars/workshops to stay up on the latest in this constantly changing industry and to share their expertise with other monument builders. The firm is an active member of the Monument Builders of Mid-America and the Monument Builders of North America associations. Today, the firm is solely owned by Janet (Mrs. Bob) Clark and Mr. & Mrs. Alan Johnson.
